Authentic villages of Lapland

Lapland is known for its pristine, arctic nature and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The region is also the home of many unique villages and towns to explore in the summer time. This journey takes you on a tour of the most interesting locations and experiences in northern Finland. The tour starts in Levi. The easiest way to get to Levi is to fly to Kittilä and continue by car. We recommend choosing an electric car or a hybrid model for a lower carbon footprint.

The first Levi-region location is the Särestöniemi Art Museum. The museum located in Kaukonen, Kittilä displays the art and working environment of Reidar Särestöniemi, who was the most remarkable Lappish artist of his time. His most well-known works are his large, colourful oil paintings from the 1960’s and 1970’s. The museum by the river Ounas is a unique combination of art, architecture, nature, and history.

Next the journey moves to the peaceful world of HaliPuu ('hugging tree' in Finnish). At HaliPuu, you'll forget all of your worries and experience the forest from a new perspective – snuggled in a cozy hammock, breathing the purest air in the world, and listening to the sounds of the forest.

The last experience of the day is at Wolf Lake. During this stop, you'll be able to relax in an authentic Finnish sauna, try a local snack (like an elk burger!), swim in a lake, or try your hand at fishing.

Travel tip:

After the first journey day, we recommend staying the night in the Levi region. The next day, the journey continues to Muonio, one-hour west of Levi. In idyllic Muonio, the day starts with a stop by a lake to learn about the history and traditions of the region.

Enjoy the unique lake scenery in Keimiöniemi surrounded by the Lappish fells. During this experience, you'll learn about the 500-year history of hunting and fishing in the area from your host, the master storyteller Jari. You will also get the chance to experience a moment as a traditional seine fisher.

A visit to Muonio is not complete without a visit to Arctic Sauna World, which is located on the shore of Lake Jerisjärvi, next to the Pallas-Ylläs National Park. Arctic Sauna World is a unique place with four elements, earth, water, air and fire combined to form the fifth element, the steaming sauna spirit. In Arctic Sauna World, you'll find four different saunas to try.

The best way to end the day in Muonio is to have dinner at the Reindeer Herder´s Cabin. Enjoy a three-course and five-star dinner by the open fire in an authentic reindeer cabin. You will also hear about reindeer year and reindeer husbandry.

Travel tip:

After a busy day and night spent in Muonio, the journey continues to Hetta to meet some adorable huskies.

A husky ride is on many visitors' bucket list when it comes to a Lapland holiday. Husky tours are also available in the summer time. This experience at Hetta Huskies starts with a tour of the farm to learn about the huskies and how they are trained and cared for. You will then help to harness the dogs and assemble the teams. After that, off to nature you go!

Travel tip:

Hetta Huskies also provides accommodation, so after a tour with these lovely animals, you can also spend the night at the farm. The last day – and stop – on this journey is at Kilpisjärvi.

During the last stop on this journey, you'll go for a leisurely, guided hike and enjoy a campfire picnic. You will explore nature with a local guide and hear the stories of the village and of everyday life in Kilpisjärvi, Arctic Lapland.
